My car won,t start on damp mornings

Whenever it is cold and damp my vauxhall nova will not start,The other morning I was sat for 1/2 an hour cranking away :cry:It doesn,t seem to matter if the choke is out or not Then when I do get it going it will quite often conk out at the first stop sign then all I get is a load of blokes beeping and calling me a silly woman,Has anybody had any similar experiences and could offer me some advice

Oh dear poor you I know just how you feel my mini is the same on cold or wet mornings. I always make sure the choke is right out and just sit there trying to start it. My friends laugh at me as I tend to bounce up and down when Im trying to get it going and often plead with it to start - although I dont think that helps! My mini took me 9 tries to start this morning and stalled twice on the way to work. I suppose I'm used to it but it can be a bit frustrating when your running late and a bit embarassing as often my skirts ride up when im sat there trying to start it. How was your nova this morning, its very wet here today?

it is probably damp getting into the leads in the ignition system, try spraying some WD40 over the distributer and the leads going to the spark plugs.

Yes it was really dreadfull this morning,I was taking my son to school before I went to work and it just sat there spluttering and teasing me,Then I had a struggle outside school, Then about 15 tries outside work tonight,Nearly everybody else had left the car park and I was still sat there cranking.I,ll try some WD40.Has anybody else tried this.I do know whatyou mean Sarah Jane about your skirt riding up,I must have had about 6 inches of slip on show this morning while cranking

Oh poor you, although Im slightly glad its not just me. I had a job trying to start the mini after work tonight probably becuase its rained all day. Took me at least ten tries to start it then it stalled a good few times just getting out the office car park. Did you remember to pull the choke out when you were trying to start your car after work?

There were a few inches of my slip showing tonight by the time I got it going too good thing no one could really see. Must have been a bit embarassing for you with your son there and your skirt riding up. Did you have tights on?

you could try a old blanket ..over the engine ,at the end of the day

keeps the warmth in the engine ..........could help ?

(best thing is a space blanket ---ie from marathons )

Been and bought some Damp start today,I will give the car a good spraying and see what happens, Yes Sarah Jane I was wearing tights,I think the slip had stuck to the tights and my skirt had slid up over the slip,I also find that when I got out at work I had a couple of inches on show as the Elastic had slid down due to pumping the accelerator.

Hi there nice to hear from you. I often have issues with my slip clinging to my tights and usually when i get to work have to go to the ladies to sort it out, although to be honest if my cars been playing up and took a while to start I usually need a wee by the time I get to work anyway. I hope your skirt hadnt gone up too far and no one saw up your skirt when you got out your car. How did you get on after work? Has the damp start helped? Ive not tried that so be interested to know what happens for you.

WD40 Does help, Many thanks for the replies,Pity WD40 doesn,t stop skirts riding up,Sarah jane when I got out at work a man told me my slip was showing and I sorted it out Embarassed

Does the car have electronic ignition or an old style distributor with points. If the latter, remove the distributor cap and wipe any moisture from inside using a clean cloth or tissue (if there are signs that arcing has taken place buy a new cap), spray lightly with WD40 and wipe around with the cloth to leave a thin water-repellant film inside.
