what are the best value performance modifications for a car?

stainless exhaust system

decat pipe

induction kit

powerflex bushes

strut braces

lowering/adjustable suspension

alloys

bigger tyres/wider wheels

chipping?

what will make my car noticibly perform better for least money? its a saxo vts.

thanks!

The top three picks would be the exhaust, followed by induction, followed by chipping. The suspension, strut bars, etc will just give you better handling, but won't do jack for power.

Yes, but putting on exhaust, intake or chipping, isn't going to make that much of a difference when it comes to gains. You may get 10-20hp out of all those. Thats not enough to effect handling or traction. Now if he wants to put on a turbo, supercharger, then thats a different story.

say the chaps got a 1.4i corsa/106 etc...something small but poky enough for town. the standard tyres are just to narrow for when you need to stop in a hurry or want to fly around bends......some lightweight steel rims might be worth while....depends on whats fitted. I wouldn't change the rolling radius of the wheel but deffo get some fatter tyres.

most alloys are for cosmetics only - they are usually heavier than the standard steel rim so this will reduce your acceleration and may cause vibration because the wheel and axle assembly is no longer balanced.

sorry - didn't read the last bit saying you have a vts........i'd go for an induction kit (get a cheap 2nd hand one off ebay! pipercross or green cotton etc)
decat pipe.....(but keep your cat for the mot!)

strut brace would be pretty good if you corner pretty hard - would reduce understeer alot!

a replacement chip is £80 on ebay - its been remapped to give you another 15bhp.

Induction kit and decat pipe about £60 +10bhp?
chip £80 + 15bhp

thats another 25 brake for £140.......cheap!!

they reckon with new bushes your car will feel like new its worth doing if your cars done a few miles! as for lowering - wouldn't bother really - adjusting the torsion bars a bitch and won't make your car handle much better. I'd recommend new tyres tho - look around for some cheap goodyear eagle f1's.........they are perfect for this car - the compound is soft enough so they grip like shite! most tyre compounds are just to hard for this light car and you get no grip. they are expensive tho - and will probly wear out after 10k miles of hard driving....

the best value thing you can do to your car is rip out everything you don't need - every bit of plastic, rear seats, carpet, electric windows, central locking motors etc.....make it as light as possible!

I'm not sure where the law stands on this but i imagine you don't want to remove your door cards....if you were to have a smack up with a hole in the door it could make a mess of your arm!

How thick!!!!!!!!!!Your car will look an absolute state mate!Plus you will hear every rattle and bang in the car!!!Even worse if your getting a big zorst!

Plus your dreaming if you think your gonna get 25bhp for that money! It takes alot more work and money for those sort of gains!F****** nissan micras will be running at 1000bhp if it was that easy!

Plus plus,F*** what they say about the weight of the alloys!A decent set of 15's from your local halfords will give you the width and look a hell of alot nicer than light steel wheels!I mean,F*** me,get with the times!!!!!Who the F*** buys wheels like that for a saxo anyway!!!

at a guess you could save 100kg by removing all the shite! Thats alot of weight just for noise proofing! they guy wants it to go faster on the cheap - thats the cheapest way i know!

25 bhp is resonable from an induction kit, decat pipe and chipping - i suggest you research it better.....but after these upgrades it will be very difficult to up the gains further without major engine work.....cams gas flowed head etc.....

go to any halfords store and look at the cars outside - all bloody saxos and 106's.....they all have 15 or 16" rims with rolled arches to make them fit.....they weight so much more than a steel rim its just stupid....remember with rotational masses there is a squared factor in the equation so any weight gain is significant. its magazines like max power telling young readers they need the fattest badest alloys around but it just fucks your car up.

Still, you dont want to look like a pikey! No interior in your car with plain steel wheels!Weather its performance upgrades or not!You will be laughed at!
Oh yeah, you dont need to role the arches for 15's on a saxo! And i guarantee the weight dfference between them is minimul!

the weight difference between a standard 14" steel rim and a 15" alloy will be noticable.....especially on a lower powered car. I don't have any scales to measure them....maybe you do and are prepared to prove me wrong?!

Im sure you could save a couple of kilograms if you take all the paint off your car too!And i bet that glass ways a bit!Windscreens are over rated anyway! Rolling Eyes
Im pretty sure the guy bought a saxo coz the way it looked! Not to strip the F****** thing down to rattiling mess!
I allready have a daily chuckle on barryboys, but if you want to see true modified cars, check out www.maxpower.co.uk its modifying at its best!

You will not notice the slightest bit of difference in performance if you take every panel out of your car!You will just get a headache from the nose!
