Is lemon juice a good method to use to highlight hair?

I used to have really blonde hair but its gone a mousey dark blonde. I want to get my old hair colour back but i don't want to use dye because i don't want to have to keep high lighting my hair because of roots.

I've heard that by putting lemon juice on your hair, it lightens.

Has anyone tried it? How do you do it? and does it really work?
