Kaiser Chiefs keyboardist Nick Baines has been forced to pull out of a concert after he was hospitalised in Brazil with a bout of appendicitis.

Baines, known to fans of the Brit band as Peanut, had his appendix removed on Thursday (06Nov08) and is recuperating in the country.

The remaining members of the rock band flew to Los Angeles to fulfill a number of commitments, including a concert and an appearance on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno.

A statement on the band's website says, "We've made it to L.A., but unfortunately we're a man down. We didn't want to make a drama out of it so we kept this quiet until now. Peanut had to have an operation to remove his appendix on Thursday, so he's been in a hospital in Brazil for a few days.

and TV appearance on The Jay Leno Show will go ahead

"The operation was a success, he's ok, and managed to play with us at Planeta Terra in Brazil on Saturday night, but he's unable to fly to the Usa until Wednesday.

"Our concert in L.A. and TV appearance on The Jay Leno Show will go ahead. We didn't want to let L.A. down and its going to be a challenge, but between Roger Lyons (Peanut's tech) and James Hennin (Simon's tech) we'll deputise and make sure the show goes on! It will be our first ever gig missing one of the band."

Baines is expected to rejoin the band for the rest of their scheduled shows, starting at Chicago Park West on Thursday (13Nov08).
