Russell Brand's movie break

7 months ago 26th Apr 08:15

'Forgetting Sarah Marshall' is the latest film from the fold of Judd Apatow, America's comedy director of the moment. It follows Peter Bretter - played by the film's writer Jason Siegel - as he tries to forget his one true love, Sarah Marshall, only to encounter her and her new flame, an English rock star, in the first place he runs away to.

Apatow crafts a certain type of offbeat 'melancomedy' - faux dramatic, overly sentimental, slightly uncomfortable, genuinely hilarious, always relying foremost on characterisation. This emphasis is apparent throughout 'Forgetting Sarah Marshall' but for one particular character more than others.

In England, it's not leading man Jason Siegel who stares out of the movie posters with his arm around the leading lady, but the long dishevelled locks and mischievous dark eyes of leather-trouser-clad Russell Brand. And his plans aren't limited to getting prime position in UK film posters as he is rapidly becoming hot property in the States.

Brand said: "The film has been really well received, we had a great opening weekend and I have got really good reviews for my part in it. My stand-up shows are selling out on the day they go on sale, so they're moving me to bigger venues. People love it and are getting it much more than I could ever imagine."

"I'm doing another film with Judd Apatow and Jonah Hill and a film with Adam Sandler at the moment, and I've been offered several more. I'm concentrating on doing films now."

Brand is a comedian and tabloid favourite, renowned in England for his string of female conquests and huge hairstyle as much as for his jokes.

In 'Forgetting Sarah Marshall', he hijacks what was probably originally a bit part - Aldous Snow, the rock star love interest of Sarah Marshall - and fills it full of his trademark humour. He speaks in wild tangential ramblings, using distinctly streetwise English and ensures he never wastes a frame he appears in.
