Sarah Jessica Parker's Sex success

However, Parker soon realised the mass appeal of the show when fans - both male and female - began approaching her on the street.

"A few weeks after the show first started airing, I had a man come up to me and whisper, 'I really like the show'," she said. "It was at that point I knew it was going to be a big success."

Carrie Bradshaw is the focus of the show - being that it is written from her perspective, with an almost constant voiceover - and is also one of the most likeable characters in the show.

Consistently looking out for her girlfriends, it is Carrie's quest for love that provides the main storyline, and Parker thinks she knows the reason for Carrie's likeability.

"I think Carrie is just a human, flawed, interesting, curious, likeable, good friend," she said.

The film also sees the return of Carrie's most promising love interest - Mr. Big, played by Chris Noth.

With their on-off relationship providing the basis for the majority of Carrie's heartbreak, Big, as he is more commonly known, has caused many arguments between female viewers who cannot decide whether Carrie should stay with him or not.

However, Noth has defended Big's behaviour, saying he is simply "misunderstood".

"He's never a cad," he said. "It's just a misinterpretation of two people's understanding of each other. It gets them to these places, but love always triumphs.

"And the journey is a journey of forgiveness in all four of the lead characters' stories. It brings it back to that universal idea that love always triumphs when two people are meant to be together ? even when they are doing everything they can to stay apart."

In the last episode of the show, Carrie and Big were seen getting back together following Carrie's disastrous emigration to Paris, France, with her older lover Aleksander Petrovsky.

The film's trailer sees Carrie plan her wedding to Big, and also shows her wearing a stunning Vivienne Westwood wedding dress, but does not reveal whether or not she goes through with the lavish ceremony.

The four years between the ending of the series and the release of the film have done little to reduce the popularity of the now iconic 'Sex and the City'.

With DVD box set sales at al all-time high, it is clear fans all over the world have not yet found a suitable replacement for the TV show that they took so dearly to their hearts.

In fact, the shooting of the film was so highly anticipated that fans lined the streets of New York in the hope of catching a glimpse of their heroines.

"When we came back and were shooting on the street, it was kind of stunning to us and the hundreds of people, and the speculation and silliness," Parker said. "We didn't understand the depth of what it was. It infringed upon the budget, because the days got slowed down by the crowds, but it's so nice to have a wonderful kind of problem. It's so nice that people are curious."

However, the passing of time has done nothing to stop rumours of conflict on set, particularly between Parker and Kim Cattrall, who plays man-eating PR executive Samantha Jones.

While Parker is quick to insist, "I love these women. I wouldn't have wanted to do it with anyone else. We are family - there would be no reason to do it otherwise. I'm so proud of the work the other ladies have done, I think they're marvellous", she reportedly avoided Cattrall at the after-party of the London world premiere of the film earlier this year.

Movie executives caused massive controversy by holding the world premiere in London, given that New York plays such an integral role in both the series and the film, but cast-member Cattrall was thrilled because she was raised in England.

"I love London", she exclaimed. "And it's amazing to see such a huge turn-out. It's very overwhelming."

However, the premiere in New York was also a star-studded affair, with Parker's husband Matthew Broderick and Black Eyed Peas star Fergie gracing the red carpet.

The film will also concentrate on Kristin Davis' character Charlotte York Goldenblatt and her quest to conceive with her lovable Jewish husband Harry, as well as following them as they raise their Chinese adopted daughter Lily.

It seems there are some shocks in store for hardcore SATC fans. Miranda Hobbes, played by Cynthia Nixon, has always been seen as the toughest of the four women, but hearts melted when she tied the knot with partner Steve Brady in an intimate ceremony among friends and family, including their baby son, Brady.

But the lawyer''s tough exterior might be making a comeback when problems arise in Steve and Miranda's marriage.

However, whatever is in store for our four leading ladies, they will definitely be more mature and more capable of dealing with various situations.

"It's four years later, and they're that much wiser and they have different interests and curiosities and they wanted new things from life," Parker said. "It's about maturity - growing up and wanting different things and looking for meaning. It is also about how you pursue love at 40-year-old versus at 20-years-old, and hopefully, just being smart!"

The making of the film has not been without hitches. The original idea to do a film came up just after the series ended, but Cattrall opposed the concept because she didn't believe in the storyline - reportedly a 'road-trip' type movie - and because she was holding out for more money.

But when Parker bought up the idea of the movie two years later and Cattrall reached a figure she was happy with (widely reported to be $6 million), the project went ahead.

"There was no script at first, there was an idea," Parker said. "When it didn't happen we all went on with our lives. Then, two years ago, I had this instinct we should revisit the idea. Our audience grew after we went off-air so the audience created the opportunity."

While three of the four actresses are reluctant to discuss the possibility of a sequel to what is sure to be a multi-million dollar movie, Cattrall is keen to reprise her role as Samantha for one last time.

"It was a blast to make and I hope we get to come back and make another," she said.

Noth is also keen to make a follow-up, adding: "I imagine if it makes a lot of money, they will want one. I don't know where Sarah stands on that. It's sort of up to her. I'm just riding her coat-tails!"

It remains to be seen what the future holds for Carrie and co., but one thing is for certain - fans worldwide will be flocking to the cinemas this weekend to see whether the big-screen version of their favourite TV show lives up to their expectations.
