Sarah Jessica Parker's Sex success

6 months ago 31st May 08:15

Arguably one of the most highly-anticipated films of all time, 'Sex and the City: The Movie' looks set to break records worldwide as it opens this week.

The decision of all four lead actresses - Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon - to reprise their roles for the movie adaptation of the hit US TV show delighted SATC fans throughout the world, and with the inclusion of Michael Patrick King on board as director, the feature-length production was always set to fulfil its obligations to honour the original series.

'Sex and the City' was originally a novel penned by Candace Bushnell, which was made up of a collection of her sex columns in The New York Observer newspaper.

The potential of the best-selling book was quickly recognised by Darren Star, who paid Bushnell $50,000 for the complete rights to her column, and adapted the stories into an HBO series, starring a little-known lead actress, Sarah Jessica Parker.

It follows the lives of four single women living in New York, a city which is often referred to as the "fifth woman", thanks to the prominence it plays in the series.

Complete with controversially raunchy sex scenes, close female friendships and fashion a-plenty, 'Sex and the City' offered a combination of things which had never been seen before on TV.

HBO may have seemed a strange choice for the series to be broadcast on, given its main shows were primarily aimed at male audiences when 'Sex and the City' premiered in June 1998.
