Steve Carell didn't even have to audition for the role in his latest movie.
The '40-Year-Old Virgin' actor was cast as Maxwell Smart in upcoming film 'Get Smart' in 2005 and was offered the part before a director had even been found.
He said: "I went to this thinking it was an audition. I didn't think they were offering me a role.
"I went with a picture and resume over to Warner Bros. and was then asked to play the part."
The film's eventual director Peter Segal was keen to sign up when he heard Carell had been cast.
Segal said: "He was actually on before I was. I heard that he was on, and then they asked me if I wanted to do it. "Producer Judd Apatow, who I knew, was working with him at the time on 'Virgin,' and I asked, 'Could I come take a look at a screening? Because I only know him from the smaller roles that he has done.' And as soon as the lights went up after the screening, I raced to the phone and said, 'I'm in! This guy is terrific.' "
