Must See Movies: Withnail and I

3 months ago 21st Aug 12:13

Director Bruce Robinson's semi-autobiographical account of his early years as a struggling actor Withnail and I that is this week's must see movie.

London. The '60s. two unemployed actors - acerbic, elegantly wasted Withnail (Richard E. Grant) and the anxiety-ridden "I" (Paul McGann) - drown their frustrations in booze, pills, and lighter fluid.

When Withnail's Uncle Monty (Richard Griffiths) offers his cottage, they escape the squalor of their flat for a week in the country, but soon realise they've gone on holiday by mistake when their wits - and friendship - are sorely tested by violent downpours, less-than-hospitable locals, and empty cupboards.

Twenty years old this year Withnail and I, starring Richard E. Grant and Paul McGann, remains one of the most popular British movies of all time as well as gaining a cult status that has grown over the years.

Robinson's picture is very brave so many pictures that have gone before Withnail and I depicyed the swinging sixties in the UK but Withnail and I took a very different view as the director and the script exposed the hardship of the time and unflinchigly showed the country as a grey and difficult place to live and find work.

The film launched the career of Richard E Grant, whose gives a hilarious ayet tragic performance as Withnail, indignation over life's injustices and missed chances.

The film was met well by the critics and went on to gross over $1.5 million at the box office before gaining cult status over the years as drinking games became linked with the movie as fans try to keep up with the characters drink for drink throughout the film.
