The Strokes' hoax deal

2 months ago 03rd Jul 13:15

The Strokes thought their first record deal was a hoax.

The 'Juicebox' hitmakers were signed by British label Rough Trade in 2000, but the band admit they found the offer difficult to take seriously.

Guitarist Albert Hammond Jr. revealed: "Some guy from Britain calls you and says he wants to sign you? You're only nineteen years old, of course you think it's all a joke,"

The band eventually gave in to label boss Geoff Travis' requests because they were promised longevity.

Albert added: "Obviously we wanted to have someone who had money to push the ideas that we wanted but at the same time we were never about getting the biggest advance, it was about the people that we saw that we could create a career with."

The Strokes are reportedly set to enter the studio next year to begin work on their fourth album, the follow-up to 2006' 'First Impressions of Earth'.
