King Juan's hit slogan

21-11-2007 14:00

Spain's King Juan Carlos' outburst at Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has become a pop culture hit in his country.

The king's words "Why don't you shut up?" - which he spat at the socialist leader during the Ibero-American Summit in Chile on November 10 - have been turned into a mobile phone ringtone which has been downloaded by over half a million people.

It has been estimated that sales from the ringtone have made the company £1 million.

The incident has also been parodied in more than 700 ways on the video sharing website YouTube.

One is a Nike advertisement featuring Brazilian footballer Ronaldinho saying: "Juan do it. Just shut up."

Another company sold more than 1,000 copies of their T-shirts bearing the slogan in the week of the outburst. Mugs bearing the phrase are also flying off the shelves.

However one lawyer who specialises in intellectual property has warned the unofficial use of the king's words could bring legal action.
