Jewish Museum patron Prince Charles

Britain's Prince Charles is to become the patron of London's Jewish Museum.

The Prince of Wales' new position will mark the first time he has become a member of a Jewish community organisation in Britain.

As he accepted the position, Charles said: "One of the most urgent issues that needs to be addressed today, in the United Kingdom and elsewhere in the world, is the fostering of understanding between people of different faiths.

"Those who can develop such understanding, I believe, will contribute so much more towards the harmonious progress of our world."

The museum is based in Camden, North London and was founded in 1932.

It is currently undergoing a major expansion after it received a £4.2 million grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Collections from its two previous sites will be under one roof when the refurbishment is completed in Autumn 2009, with the new museum containing larger exhibition galleries, education facilities, a large auditorium and displays aimed at adults and children.
