Queen Elizabeth's portrait auction

2 months ago 22nd Sep 14:00

A portrait of Britain's Queen Elizabeth will be auctioned off for charity tomorrow (23.09.08).

The painting - by renowned contemporary artist Sir Peter Blake - will be part of a collection of art hoping to raise more than £100,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support.

The work is based on a picture taken by the late royal photographer Lord Lichfield and was originally painted for a reception held at the Royal Academy of Arts to celebrate the queen's Golden Jubilee in 2002.

Sir Peter is well known for his work in the music industry, designing album covers including The Beatles' 'Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club' and 'Stop The Clocks' by Oasis.

His other critically acclaimed works include vivid paintings and collages of seemingly-everyday scenes and objects.

He was awarded a knighthood for his services to art.

Other artists whose work is set to go under the hammer at the Macmillan De'Longhi auction in London include Damien Hirst, Gavin Turk and Stella Vine.
