2 months ago 25th Sep 14:00

Britain's Queen Elizabeth is to celebrate the 50th birthday of children's TV show 'Blue Peter'.

The royal will host a special tea party for the programme's staff and four viewers at her official London residence Buckingham Palace.

The queen will also present the lucky youngsters with the show's highest award - the Gold Blue Peter Badge.

'Blue Peter' editor Tim Levell is thrilled the queen has chosen to celebrate the show's landmark occasion.

'Blue Peter' has been at the heart of children's lives for 50 years, and we are absolutely delighted that the queen is recognising this by extending the kind invitation to us.

He said: "'Blue Peter' has been at the heart of children's lives for 50 years, and we are absolutely delighted that the queen is recognising this by extending the kind invitation to us.

"Our four lucky 'Blue Peter' viewers will have the most special day of their lives - and we hope the experience will be enjoyed by all the children watching at home."

The tea party will be filmed and broadcast in an extended episode of the hit series on October 16 - the anniversary of 'Blue Peter'.
