Royal News Jordan's Queen Rania visits newborn babies in Cape Town

04-04-2006 13:56

Jordan's Queen Rania Al-Abdullah visited newborn babies at a Cape Town hospital yesterday (03.04.06).

The stunning royal - who is touring South Africa in her role as a UN Children's Fund (Unicef) global leader for children - spent time looking around the labour and neonatal wards at the Tygerberg Hospital.

Rania - who is married to King Abdullah of Jordan - later paid a special visit to the children's ward, where she met with young patients and their families.

As she ended her visit the 36-year-old monarch - who devotes much of her spare time to a host of social and welfare projects - praised the clinic's "outstanding" work in maternity and child care.

Head of obstetrics Gerhardt Theron is quoted on the IOL.co.za website as saying: "It was really pleasant. She's well informed and asks good questions, and she's easy-going and very elegant."

Provincial health minister Pierre Uys said the mother-of-four's visit was an important step.

He said: "She has a lot of influence in women's and children's health and I think it's important that people like her be an ambassador for South Africa and take the message back to the World Health Organisation."
