Jordan's Queen Rania joined Hollywood actress Renee Zellweger on Tuesday (13.06.06) to launch a new initiative to help disadvantaged children.

The glamorous pair were among a host of female humanitarian leaders, who showed their support for The Global Women's Action Network For Children in a three-day conference, held on the shores of the Dead Sea.

Rania was quoted in Britain’s Hello! magazine as saying: "The Global Women's Action Network For Children was launched to tackle some of humanity's oldest tragedies, the needless deaths of millions of mothers and babies every year and the wasted potential of tens of millions of girls who are kept out of school."

During the summit, Children's Defence Fund President Marian Wright Edelmen, reiterated the need for urgent action.

She said: "Every minute a woman in the world dies from children. We women on the world want to say 'stop the unjust and unnecessary death of women'. We are determined to stop it."

Rania is a passionate supporter of charity and humanitarian causes around the world.

Earlier this year, she praised American children’s cartoon, ‘Ben and Izzy’, for promoting race tolerance among youngsters.

The animated show features two 11-year-old boys, one American and the other Arab, who travel through time to experience different cultures.

The monarch added: “Whether we are Muslims, Christians or Jews… whether we live in the Middle East or the Upper West Side… we all want our children to be able to make the most of their potential in a secure, peaceful and just world.”
