30-01-2007 14:00

Jordan's Queen Rania has become UNICEF's first ever Eminent Advocate for Children.

The queen signed an agreement at the Economic Forum in Switzerland cementing her role in the new post for the The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF).

UNICEF Executive Director Ann Veneman said: "Queen Rania has been a tireless champion for children.

"This title recognizes her steadfast commitment to creating a better world for children."

As Eminent Advocate, the queen will help the organisation raise awareness of children's issues and promote better health, education, welfare and protection for children across the world.

Queen Rania, an active supporter of UNICEF and its programs in her home country of Jordan, has been instrumental in encouraging progress in the country's education system.

The royal has also visited learning centres in India and helped with the delivery of vital supplies following Pakistan's earthquakes.
