US Open Comes Alive

Round four is where the men’s US Open tennis has really come alive and with the top three seeds struggling it looks wide open as to who will make it to the final on Sunday.

Despite looking unstoppable since the French Open the number one seed and new Olympic Champion Rafael Nadal was handed a surprising test by American Sam Querrey in their third fourth round match-up.

What should have been an easy victory for Nadal turned into a four set thriller as Querrey, ranked 55th in the world, pushed the Spaniard despite Nadal taking control in the first set.

But after eventually regaining control and taking the fourth set 6-3 the popular Spaniard has set up a quarter final match with American Mardy Fish.

But the world number one, who is going for his third Grand Slam title of 2008 after success at the French and Wimbledon, wasn’t the only one to struggle in in his fourth round match as Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic were both pushed to five sets by Andreev and Robredo.

Federer, who has had a run of poor form since losing his Wimbledon crown and world number one ranking to Nadal earlier in the summer, started poorly against the big hitting Russian Andreev.

The fragility and uncertainty that has dogged Federer since his humiliating French Open final defeat was more that apparent throughout the match as he handed Andreev seven break points by the beginning of the second set.
